drastic

My short vacation from work's slowly coming to an end. I'll be flying back to Ilo-ilo the day after the New Year to resume and ultimately FINISH what should have been completed already. Sigh. It's not even 2007 and I'm ranting already. I should just get it out of my system NOW so that all my negativity will be gone!

I could sum up 2006 in 2 words. Roller-coaster. There was a lot of highs and an equal amount of lows. Lots of fulfillment and frustrations. Happiness in my personal, family and social life and anger and doubt in my professional life. I guess I'm just working too hard without seeing clearly where I'm headed. In as much as I enjoy my chosen profession, I guess everyone will suffer from some sort of work stress at some point. I know I could say I'm suffering from burnout but its different when you're as "frustrated" as I am right now. I'll just have to think things through again and must prepare for more changes that I will be expecting in the Year of the Pig.

As we bid the year goodbye, let me share the message Tita Tess sent me... "Before 2006 ends, I thank all the good people like YOU who made the passing year good for me. Thank you so much for your friendship. May 2007 bring us good luck, good health, prosperity and lots of love. God bless us all."

May you have a Prosperous New Year!

P.S.
As you may have noticed already, I've changed the template of this blog. Just one of the new things I wanna change this year. (
Vee- I'm gonna need your help reloading my blogroll. Thanks in advance.)

reunion.

Christmas' always a time for family, for small and big reunions and other celebrations. This year, Christmas came early for my family. For the first time in a long while, My mom and her siblings were in the same place and it is a happy time. I took a brief break from work just to be a part of the celebrations and we even dressed up for it!
My cousin got married the other day. I'm only a year older and now everyone's lookin' at me. There's always conversation on who will get married next and I was the logical target, being the eldest of my brood, but it's a good thing that I'm a guy so there's less pressure. A few years ago I could always say that I'm waiting for the other cousins first but they did and now I have to be prepared for the quick answers. It's not that I DO NOT want to be married and all but not all love stories have a happy ending. My love life in particular isn't that rosy but that will be another story for another post. Meanwhile, the reunion of sorts was great. I've met all the additions and hopefully there'll be more of this in the future.

hilot.

What you don't know won't hurt you, that is till you see your doctor.

My back started to hurt again 2 weeks ago and this time I was having difficulty walking or even just standing up. This is bad,... so bad that I really had to see a doctor this time. Unlike earlier this year when I had U.T.I., this was another thing. This time i need to have some tests, and I took all of it, CBC, FBS, Lipid profile etc. It could be nothing or I could have everything. I was hoping nothing will show up but I expected the worst.

When the results was explained to me by the doctor, my worst fear didn't happen. I got 3 out of 5. No celebrations here. My blood sugar was normal, my liver was normal and I'm not hypertensive, but I have a slightly above-average cholesterol level and I have high readings of uric acid. Shit. Now the hard part. I have to take some medications for 2 months and HAVE to stay clear of some food groups for everything to normalize, and I have to exercise! I have weekly sports activities when I was in Manila, but while working here I wasn't able to participate in any. Though I do get to walk a lot while at work, the doctor advised me to do other activities because my body has adapted to the level of stress associated with work. Ah well, The good thing is I'll be coming home soon and I can go back to playing basketball and badminton.

My back still hurt up to this day even after a "hilot" kneaded all the air in my body. Though she said I had a lot of air in me but after the session my body still hasn't deflated. Hehehe.

backtrack!

*You can always tell when you don't have much to do on a Sunday when you let yourself be talked into getting your hair relaxed.... like I did earlier today.

Like any other weekend here, I spend my afternoons at the Mall watching the latest flick or just checking my mails or gettin a haircut. My hair's been having a mind of it's own lately like it always does. The starnds are quite flimsy so it's easier to maintain when its short. What was supposed to be a routine haircut turned into a marathon ritual where the "barber" sweet-talked me into gettin a facial and.. a hair spa treatment. And I thought you can only get that at a Gandang Ricky Reyes when lo and behold, the first time I step into a barbershop and they suckered me into this. Ah.. well. It wasn't half-bad but I should've had my hair dyed.

* Surfin the cable channels a few nights ago, I stumbled upon the movie "Hotshots" again. Can't help but watch it again even if it means missing Grey's Anatomy on Star World. Good thing I already saw that episode and settled and saw my childhood flashed before my eyes.
There are some moments in my life that I can clearly remember all because It has a movie attached to itand Hotshots was one of them. This was the last movie I ever saw together with my Mom and sister. I clearly remember it because my Mom and I had just come from the hospital for my check-up after being sick with "dengue", then only known as h-fever. We caught the last full show at the Baron Theater near Trabajo Market. Apart from the great soundtrack, it is a happy memory for me cause in a few months I was about to start secondary education and I started watching movies with my friends afterwards.

* Happy days during my furlough in Manila last week. Spent some time with family and friends and had a helluva time. Thanks guys!

Maybe a little TOO MUCH fun!

Two lives.

The flight home was a little different than last year. First thing is Cebu Pacific flight was on time. It only took me 20 minutes from checking-in my luggage to boarding. Second, there were more passengers than a year ago considering that it's actually just a 1-day holiday.
I didn't win in the game on-board the flight unlike last year. I did get to buy an overpriced CP wallet with strap from the cute flight attendants, Sugar, Yamm and Orange. Add some flour and you have a cake. After the game I slept the rest of the way. We arrived 15 minutes early, another first, and I finally arrived home around 8 in the morning.
My Mom and I went to our family mausoleum as usual. The crowds at the cemetery isn't as many as last year but it sure was an unusually hot November day, with us having El Niño afterall. Stayed there for only a couple of hours then went home for a late lunch.
My scheduled business while I'm here is quite hectic. I have to check on some current projects while I go meet with some prospective clients. I also need to pay some professional dues, renew my license and visit my doctors for some regular check-ups. One thing I'll definitely miss is my nephews' christening. I still haven't seen him since I arrived and will surely not be able to attend the event, lest I'm named as one of the godfathers, then my Mom obliged to come home again next week. I will also meet some friends over the next few days for some post-birthday celebrations, Manila style. I may have a lot of things to do but I only have errands up to staurday only. I purposely reserved Sunday as my TV day. I'm looking forward to some advanced episodes of Lost- season 3 and Prisonbreak- season 2 that my little brother downloaded.
Being in Manila can sometime be disorienting, having stayed the previous year in Iloilo. It almost feel like I have two different lives, one here and one in the Visayas and I could not compare which suited me more. Right now, I feel incomplete without the other cause circumstances have presented me with other opportunities that may extend my stay in Iloilo. Being the workaholic that I am, its stupid to pass this up. I guess this is God's way of showing me my path in life and I'm looking forward to it.

changes

This story changed my life.

A Mother and her daughter was walking home from school when they stopped at a fruit vendor. While the Mother was browsing thru the selection, the vendor gave the girl an orange. The girl excitedly showed her Mom the orange she she said.

" Now dear, What do we say to the nice man?"

Her daughter, after examining the fruit, stretched out her arm to the vendor and with a smile replied "Peel it!"

This was from the book The Daily Bread, the little inspirational literature with a story for each day of the year. I already misplaced my copy (since it was circa 1998 or 1999, I think) and I ernestly tried to tell this story verbatim. The moral of the story was that most of us fails when it comes to appreciating the small blessings that have just been given to us, like the little girl in the story. Sometimes we are all focused on wishing for the things we want and forget to give thanks on the things we receive, most of which is what we actually need. There's actually another proverb about this...

"God always answers our prayers. He says Yes I'll give you what you want.
He says wait, it is not yet time or He says No and gives you something better."

My life was a mess back then. I'm not in trouble or something but I just hit some bumps in the road in all aspects of My life. I was actually depressed. Everything was stagnant, my work, my love life and life at home. My work has become really boring, monotonous even. I've just had my heart broken and I've also played with the feelings of another girl, something I promised myself I wouldn't do. My relationship with my family was a mess. Not even a bunch of inspirational books lifted my spirits, but this story changed all that.

Every morning I read the passage for that day. I was just going through the motions of my routine and then it hit me. I did not move for a few minutes as mixed emotions rushed through me and for the first time in a long while, I was in tears. How could I've been so stupid and not realize this earlier. It would have saved me a lot of grief and distress.

I went to work later with renewed faith and hope that whatever what happens, I'm still thankful just to make it through the day. We can't avoid change and time changes everything. Let's just hope that everything changes for the better.

P.S. I started this post with just 1 niece and finished with 2. Two kids now calls me Tito as my sister gave birth by CS to a healthy baby... i don't know exactly as I didn't pester my Mom with the details. It's a good thing that "Milenyo" has passed already before she went into labour.

and 1

This post can also be titled 2 in 1. I just realized that I've been blogging for 2 years now. Shoutout to Vikki as the one to blame... hehe. Just joking. Many thanks to you Ma'am.
"How do you measure, measure a year." Thanks for visiting and here's to "another year" of nonsense and hopefully I'll be able to rename my blog to "single-attached!"

525,600 minutes.

Borrowing the opening line from "Rent", is exactly the amount of time I've spent here in Ilo-ilo. Give or take a few thousand. I never expected that a 3-month project would take this long to finish but hey, I stopped countin' a couple of months back.

In reality, I only have another month to go till we officially turnover the "houses" to their respective Owners and I'm eagerly waiting the day my boss tells me to pack-up and leave already. I'm officially 1 year old here and I'll just subtract this number from my real age when I'm back in Manila.

1 year working away from home is equivalent to...
~89,496 total steps up 7 sets of stairs 6 times a week.
~4,405 kms. travelled to and fro along with 28 hours of waiting time for the plane to leave.
~1,695 kms. travelled on foot while working.
~375 or so reading material (newspaper and magazines)
~330 actual days spent in Ilo-ilo,35 days in Manila.
~44 movies watched at the mall.
~bought 4 pairs of footwear, 11 shirts and 1 beach towel.
~3 seasons of the Amazing Race
3 broken promises.
~2 trips to the beach in pre-oil spill Guimaras.
~2 seasons of Survivor
~2 Manny Pacquiao fights.
~one NBA season, Rockstar and American Idol.
~1 bout iwth UTI and 9 or 10 days with the flu.
~0 pounds lost due to the delicious food and numerous dinners of batchoy, chicken inasal, mangoes and "langka".

It's the battle of the sponsors. Round 1. Nike vs. Adidas. Nike won.

what the...

You Are a Sprinkled Donut

Flamboyant and flashy, you're easily distracted by shiny things.
You're definitely a snazzy number, and you usually catch everyone's eye in the room.
And you've got the goods to back it up your colorful image.
(Though too much of you gives people a stomach ache!)

30 thigs a MAN should KNOW by age 30.

This is from a newspaper article clipping that I saved way back in 2001. It was about a month before my 29th birthday and saving the clipping would give me a list of things to accomplish in the next 12 months.

Rage against Age.
30 things a MAN should KNOW by age 30.

1. The difference between love and lust.
2. How to change a tire, a diaper and a woman's mind.
3. When to hold on and when to let go.
4. Your capacity for intimacy and alcohol.
5. Basic carpentry, plumbing and automotive repair.
6. Advanced foreplay.
7. Trouble when he sees it.
8. True love when he feels it.
9. A load of bull when he hears it.
10. The symptoms of PMS and how to deal with them.
11. How to fast-talk and slow-dance.
12. The art of seduction.
13. That his wife (lover, grilfriend) is not his mother.
14. A woman's erogenous zones.
15. What he wants out of life and how to go after it.
16. Which medical tests he needs and when to get them.
17. How to make money, dinner, conversation and love.
18. How to start a fire - in the hearth and the heart.
19. How to unhook a bra with one hand - in the dark.
20. How to give a toast and take a compliment.
21. The fundamental workings of the female psyche.
22. The Ten Commandments.
23. The importance of trying to follow them.
24. His way around the Kitchen.
25. The futility of unrequited love.
26. The ecstacy of unconditional love.
27. How to open a bottle of champagne.
28. How to negotiate.
29. How to close a deal.
30. How to open up.

4 years hence...21 out of 30 ain't bad.

what they mean...want ads

Read this from the Business section of the Philippine Star....

Her's how to interpret some of the things they say in want-ads.

Competitive Salary - we remain competitive by paying less than our competitors.
Join our fast paced Company- we have no time to train you.
Casual work atmosphere - We don't pay you enough to expect that you will dress up.
Seeking candidates with a wide variety of experience - you will need to replace three people who just left.
Requires team leadership skills - You will have the responsibilities of a manager without the pay or respect.
Good communications skills - Management communicates poorly, so you have to figure out what they want and do it.

movies with my Dad

I'm back in Manila on a 72-hour pass from work, which is taking longer to finish that expected. I know I've mentioned this over and over but hopefully everything would be completed by end of September (or October). There I go again!

My Father left us on August 19, 1983. I only spent 10 years of my life with him but my memory of him is always about going to the movies, which he loved doing. He would always bring me along to watch the movies that my Mom would not watch, so my childhood movie experience is watching Sly as "Rocky" and Da King as "Panday" or some other toughie cum hero. A few Clint eastwood and Charles Bronson flicks would be squeezed-in once in a while. I guess its no surprise that watching these old movies would bring back the memories.

One reason I came home is to commemorate my Father's Death Anniversary. It's been 23 years and all the hurt is gone but I still long for his presence every now and then. I flew home on the eve of the anniversary and when I got home, "Firefox" starring Clint Eastwood was showing on Cinemax. Oddly enough it was the last movie I went to see with my Dad before he passed away. Maybe it was a sign that for the next few days, our family will be complete again, even for just a few days. It's also been a year since I resigned from my previous work and It'll be a year since I've been in Ilo-ilo but that's another story.

What I've learned....

" Sometimes I think there's no reason to get out of bed... then I feel wet and I realize there is." -Homer Simpson

I've been reading quite a few Esquire magazines lately, which I bought dirt cheap from the back issue bin. Apart from the usual fashion, tech and entertainment guides that most magazines have, It's really entertaining to read their "what I've learned" section with their featured celebrity. It's entertaining and prompted me to do my own list. Maybe in the future this will be relevant when I finally get my 15 minutes....

* Everyone has an agenda!
* When it's about work, money changes everything the bottomline IS EVERYTHING!
* In my line of work, EGO is always mistaken for knowledge.
* No matter what your grades are in school, the younger you are the less you know.
* If it pays well...It's a career. If it just gets you by... It's a job. If the pay sucks... It's a vocation!
* My definition of Epiphany is having a great idea then finding out there are others that already have a website for it.
* Your opinion about other people will be your paranoia about what others will think when you're in the same situation.
* A steel drum when full creates less noise than when it's empty.....just like our brain.
* Between blognapping and chain e-mails, the former is the lesser evil.
* Life is like a joke.... it needs a set-up, a punchline and a follow through. Then it'll be a great joke.
* It's better to be a flash in the pan than a stain on the wall.
* Every person, at some point in their life, will suffer from selective amnesia.
* Each person will have one pivotal moment that they will remember all their life (and constantly tell you about it, over and over and over)
* You will always have another chance to catch something that you missed.... like cable TV.

* I'd rather travel by air than by sea, cause when something goes wrong, you can be sure that you're not the only one who doesn't know how to fly!
* The only difference between news and gossip is that the latter is free.

More again next time!

full circle.

I received a call from my Mom a few days ago. She rarely calls me except when it is important or when maternal intuition kicks in. It's usually the first one. She was asking if I could lend some tools and books for the son of her friend who's also studying to become an Architect. I always thought that only a handfull of persons find my course appealing, well I was wrong.
My original impression is rooted in high school when there were only 2 of us who took the entrance exams for Architecture and the other one backed-out pa. Plus, I never knew any any Achitect personally before my college years so add them together and, this must be a boring course, but I took it nevertheless if only for my love for drawing.

I've always loved doodling when I was still a kid. My days are spent bent over a piece of paper on trying to replicate the anime robots that was popular at the time. I have in school waht I call drawing buddies. Oblivious to our teacher, we agree on a character and try to draw it and find out who's better. Obviously, I carried it all through high school and it was an easy choice on which course to take. This is primarily my objective in becoming an Architect, to be able to draw all the time and get paid for it. My only misconception though I thought there was no Math subjects which I immediately found out and twas too late to back out.

NOw, 13 years after graduating, I'm quite happy and fulfilled professionally in what I have accomplished and it is now my turn to become a "mentor" to those foolish enough to be what I am. In this business that is cutthroat and merciless, when style is often mistaken for substance, when what separates the good from the successful is the EGO, when compared to other professions, you're always second guessed by the client.

You gotta love it to endure, and when done the right way, you'd have a tangible legacy that is forever yours.

ho-hum

Nothing new to say except what I've been saying these past few entries.... hope everything gonna finish on time.... the end is in sight.....I'm so bored nowadays that this is the longest stretch (almost 8 weeks already) in between flights to Manila. I'm booked to come home briefly middle of July to attend wedding and probably in home again a couple of weeks later for a family reunion. My boss' already hounding me to finish the work here so I can go back to the Manila office. Though I initially intended to freelance after this stint, My boss made an offer that made me re-evaluate my options.
I've also been with a cold for the longest time now. It's probably the heat, dust and all the other particles of the construction site and I'd really wish it'll go away soon. Lots of fluids and bedrest doesnt seem to work but I'm coughing less when I'm in bed.
I'm at the mall, as where I usually spend my weekend. Watched a movie, got a haircut and bought a few previously-owned books to read throughout the week. Even though tomorrow is a holiday, I'll probably be at work, again, doing nothing, as usual.

Sunday, May 21, 2006

just nonsense.

Everthing's going as scheduled at the jobsite and I'm expecting (nee hoping) that I will be in Manila by July. I have been quite busy, or trying to look like I'm working, this past weeks. Supertyphoon "Caloy" made a quick stop here and my colleagues and I were still at the jobsite that day. It was a very, very, very wet day as I walked around the compound in full raingear looking for leaks. Never heard the winds howl that strong and Ilo-ilo was without electricity for almost 2 days. The winds was so strong that the rain fell to the ground almost horizontally. It was bright and sunny again after a couple of days.

I'm already on my 8th month working here and I can already understand "some" Ilonggo. It's a good thing that some of the words are of spanish origin and it's quite easy to get what the people here are talking about. My co-workers can speak to me in Ilonggo while I answer in Tagalog. I still confine my conversations in Ilonggo to "san ka makadto?", "tagpila?" or "manyapon ka 'ga?". Any longer than that and I revert back to tagalog. Hehehe.

Even though the project here's almost finished and even if I'm expecting to come home afterwards, I'm still feeling that my stay here may be stretched further 'coz I'm getting inquiries on some projects on the side. I don't know if this is God telling me to stay here. It's a very exciting prospect and this may be good for me in the long run but this is something I have to think through.

My sister came home from her 10-month tour as a bar attendant aboard a Norwegian Star cruise ship. She was cruising to and fro the Carribean along the east coast of the U.S. Her first contract was the Alaskan route and she was at the west coast. Bad thing is she's away from her 4-year old daughter 10 months in a year.

That's my sister with my mom and neice at Water Camp in Kawit, Cavite.

I'll be in Manila briefly by the end of June for some important engagements and will probably be home again middle of July for a family reunion of sorts. And if all's well, will be flying home for good by the end of July, hopefully.

Unless....

moo points!

  • I'm in the final stretches of my stay here in Western Visayas as the project's slowly being completed. I've actually overstaying since we (my boss and I) thought that I'll only be here for 3 months when it's already been 7 months and I will probably be here till July. Can't blame anyone of course, that just how the business goes. Besides, in my whole professional life, I've never met a contractor who has yet to make a deadline.
  • My accomodations in the boarding house I'm staying at was upgraded earlier today. My pseudo Mom here transfered me to a bigger room where her son used to stay. The son's been in Manila since the Holy week and is only awaiting his papers before he travels to Korea to work.
  • I may have mentioned this in a previous entry but there's certainly a lot of Koreans here. They find it cheaper to study English here in the Philippines than in other countries, plus they've lots of places to go and things to do. Everytime I see a group of Koreans walking I try to spot any look-alikes with the telenovela girls you see on TV. I'm still trying to look for Yun Jin Kim among them.
  • Every blog I visited so far has written about the ongoing American Idol season. Here's mine. It's a relief that Kellie's out of the competition and only 5 remains. She may have been affected by the criticisms and has sang half-heartedly the past weeks. Chris and Kat will be the final 2 coz those 2 will complete the set of musical genres the producers of Idol want in their stable.Taylor Hicks could be the underdog pick. Whoo!
  • I've watched every reality series given airtime but I always stick to watching the Amazing Race, Survivor and American Idol. I've watched snippets of The Bachelor, Bachelorette, The Apprentice, The Joe Schmoe show and the list goes on. There will be another show which will air on Star titled "The Scholar" or ... but the gist is a group of the "smartest" HS students in the US competing who will get the college scholarship to the college of their choice. My question is, if you're really that smart, doesnt the school come after you?
  • It's the weekend and I just loitering around the mall, again, as is every Sunday I'm stay here. I'm just trying to spend a "cool" day at the Mall, wasting time on so-so movies while waiting for the big movies like X3 and the Da Vinci Code to be shown. Watched Eight Below and Just Friends and trying to stay away from Basic Instinct 2! You could almost hear those Alaskan Malamutes talking! Can't wait to return to Manila and continue watching "the L word" on DVD.

.... Mooooo.

reverse.

Unlike most of the cityfolk, I'll be flying home for the Holy Week for some well earned rest. I've already had my share of sand and surf here so I'll just park my @$$ at home this time. Besides, my skin's already toast 'coz of my constant sun exposure, and I plan to go to Boracay before my stint here is over. Hopefully it'll be in a couple of months.

My mind's still undecided on what I want to do after this. Should I go on my own or stay employed? Common sense would tell me to stay employed 'coz it's still an uncertain market put there. My heart wants one thing and my brain wants the opposite. When most people desperately want a job, here I am wanting to get out. I sometimes don't get it why I think this way.

Ah well, so much for my worries. It's Holy Week, I shouldn't think of myself for once.

Guimaras part deux

Spent the weekend at Guimaras, this time with the family I'm staying with. I wasn't able to swim 'coz I was tired from a whole night of partying with some co-workers. I also suffered from a burst of stupidity when I left my eyeglasses and only remembered that I lost them when I got home. Sheeesh. I took some pictures though.

saw some kids playing softball in the middle of the coconut trees.

Four Jobs I've Had In My Life:

2. School clerk- My job was to list all the grades of all the students in the UST-College of Education to be distributed to the students. It was fun ‘coz I got to see the grades or our teachers and realized how difficult it was to teach.
3. College Professor- Hard to believe I had it in me to do this, but it’s in the genes naman eh. How I love to hear the “stupidents” “Siiir, baka pwede naman special project na lang!”.

Four Films I Can Watch Over And Over:
1. Sleepless in Seattle.- I have a radar for this movie. I can always find which channel it’ll be on and I’ll catch it at exactly the same scene when Annie first gets to hear Sam on the radio.

3. The Matrix Reloaded- Everything gets clearer each time I watch.

13 years.

Talk about March Madness! A lot different from the Dance, I just spent the past couple of weeks in hell, or at least it felt like it. Summer beckons as the temperature is surely reaching the mid 30's, along with a perfectionist boss and paranoid homeowners, it's the just the right recipe to send someone who's in charge, someone like me, to be sent into the asylum.

I don't understand why some people can be so inconsiderate. Is it normal for employees to be "always" the one to blame? Or is this just a cultural thing? Is it just me? Does it get harder as you near the top? This is almost the same situation I was in before I left my previous boss. Is it the stress of maintaining the stature of one's position or profession? I pray I won't be this way when I have my own company! Please enlighten me!

"I need a Juicy!"

Maybe it's just me. Maybe you do need to be more aggressive or ruthless for you to be successful. I hope my observation's wrong. I was taught in the ways that if you work hard and treat people right you'll be blessed! 13 years after graduation and I still can't see it happening. Maybe nice guys do finish last.

The end of the construction project is a couple of months delayed but my personal commitments have been harrassing me all the way from Sampaloc. I pray that this will be something that can sustain me for a long time. I had to turn down a couple of jobs because of my proximity from Manila, and I'm someone who doesn't turn down a job. 13 years ought to be enough time to prepare. I have to do it sooner or later. This way, no more overtime, no more tardiness, no more "intentional flu". This way, it'll just be my time!

Welcome to Miami.

Spent the weekend at the beach 2 sundays ago when a good friend flew here on a "business trip". Like before, it was my first time to visit this part of Iloilo even though I've been here almost 5 months now. It just shows how lazy I am when it comes to travelling. My idea of relaxation is sleeping at home or getting a massage. I took this photo late afternoon, just as we're about to go home. Maybe I'll come back soon and get a morning shot of the place.

Alvin and me at Miami beach, Tigbauan, Iloilo. The place is owned-managed by Takahashi, a Japanese with his Filipina wife. Takahashi spends equal time here and Japan as I think, required by law. The place is ok, with lots of things to do. The beach on the other hand is not as great as in Guimaras but it's ok.

... great place... tacky name.

D-day + 10

I should have posted this a week ago when the excitement of my first Dinagyang experiemce is still fresh, but laziness took the better of me. The anticipation for Dinagyang 2006 was fever pitch during the last week of January, with every establishment announcing their promos and come-ons. ABS-CBN and GMA brought in all their stars with a gazillion show everywhere you go. Manila's rock bands each had their own mini-concerts each night of the fiesta as everyone and their mother was here and for 3 days, Iloilo was party central.

With a week of festivities already finished, I only got to join the hoopla on the last 2 days of Dinagyang. Along with my co-workers, they accompanied me to the Food Festival on the eve of the Ati-Ati competitions. The streets of the city was closed to traffic as there are several arenas or Judging Areas where the tribes will perform. At the city's main street, the local merchants has set up tables for the revelers to eat, drink and enjoy the parade of rock bands, local and then some. Too bad I had to keep my enjoyment short for the bigger event the following day.

D-day. I almost didn't want to go and watch the Ati-ati competitions live til I saw on the TV Katrina Halili, off I went to the Freedom Grandstand and see for myself. Too bad Katrina just left and I had to contend with the mass of other "non-paying" patrons to try and watch 20 tribes perform their own dance.

This is the closest I got to the Main Judging area. There are other Judging areas scattered all throughout the city and all of the 20 tribes must perform on each of them. This takes a lot of dedication and stamina as each set is almost 10-15 minutes long.

One of the favored tribes, Tribu Silak exiting the Freedom Grandstand.

I only had the energy to watch 5 of the tribes as hunger and standing-watching for over an hour will surely get you tired. I did get to catch all the pretty Ilonggas that was out partying, and I still have to catch Katrina for the SOP show somewhere else.

feel the drummin'....

It's been a very hectic fortnight since my last post here. My workload has tripled since most everyone was on vacation and now everything is being rushed to make up for lost time. I had to report to work even on Sundays just to catch up, not to mention my "other" commitments in Manila. now I'm really screwed. I am not complaining about the work, but being here has totally put my private practice on hold. I now have to deal with my clients online.... or thru correspondence. Looking ahead I hope this situation doesn't gets worse.

There's also an air of excitement around here 'coz in a few days the annual Dinagyang Festival will be held on the 28th and 29th. I may have missed on the Feast of the Sto. Niño in Manila but I'm looking forward to my first Dinagyang. The "opening salvo" of the festivities was yesterday, as the different "tribes" was on parade and to sognal a week-long affair. Also to be celebrated on the same day as the festival is the Lunar New Year which means, more "tikoy" for me. This is the first time in a long while that the 2 events coincided on one day. I'm reserving my energy on these days and see if I pass out due to the excitement.

back to reality...

It's was a different kind of New Year's celebration we had this year. It was only my brother, my Mom and myself ushering in 2006 at home. My married siblings aren't with us this year, I guess I just had to accept the fact that everything does change, and grows old. Much like old times, I watched the evening sky slowly get covered by firewaorks and smoke as 2005 faded, albeit with a second to spare.

Too bad everything had to end. I grudgingly went back to work the day after New Year like everyone else. I just wished I wasn't working so far detached from home 'coz it's difficult when you have some matters to attend to at home. I wasn't able to complete all the tasks I had to accomplish during my stay in Manila. My clearance from my previous complany is still not finished. My other projects, I have to complete here in Molo. And I still have a slight fever carried over from Christmas. Not your ideal start for 2006.

Looking back, I'm quite sure I didn't fulfill any of my resolutions from last year. I'll just have try to do it all again this year. Hopefully, my luck will change.

On the plane ride back, I was a bit early 'coz my flights' check-in counter wasn't open yet. I met an American who's in the same flight as I was and we ended talking to each other until the plane reached Ilo-ilo. He's quite an old fellow who's been around awhile "chasing" these overseas jobs so he can retire with his shrimp farm and sail on his yatch. I didn't say much except react to his stories. One thing I like about this experience's having a complete stranger tell me his life story and not at any point, hesitant to tell it. Another good thing came out of this since he offered to "help" me out as we exchanged contact details.

Hopefully with this, my luck will change soon.
